Are you looking to expand and refine your photographic vision?  And, would you like to do so in a nurturing, supportive and creative environment?  If so, then the Terrific Trio Workshop is the place for you.

The 2019 workshop will be led by Michael Gordon, Guy Tal, and Bruce Hucko

While the field work takes place in the great variety of landscape surrounding Moab, the most important work takes place in the landscape within . . . you! 

The Terrific Trio Workshop, was originally conceived as part of the the Moab Photo Symposium. Like the Symposium, this workshop seeks to help you improve the making of personally meaningful imagery.  We all have a vision.  We all react and respond to and reflect on our experiences in nature.  Refining and sharing our individual vision is lifelong and fun, especially in the company of like-minded people.

In this workshop we make images inspired by our internal landscape of thoughts and feelings, with the help of the objects, light and weather of the external landscape.

In the formal classroom environment we’ll cover topics of the creative process, the language of art, visualization and composition, Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop techniques, photographing and processing for B&W and other technical considerations.

We’ll also have special sessions on portfolio development, preparing images for web and print and writing about our work.

Field session locations on NPS and BLM lands have been chosen for their diversity of subject matter.  Canyons, cliffs, the myriad landforms, spring vegetation and changing weather will spark our senses.  Field sessions will concentrate on composition, capture techniques, lensing, use of filters and other field work.  Group assignments and casual field exercises will be balanced with plenty of one-on-one instructor time and personal photography.  All the time we’ll be exploring the question, “What am I responding to?  And why?” as we make photographs that reflect our sense of place and show a bit of our personality. 

Rounding out the course will be image processing sessions, critiques on current work and the sharing of meals. 

While we will be visiting and making photographs in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and some well-known BLM locations, our goal is to leave this workshop with a set of new or renewed creative thinking and technical skills that you can then employ in making all future photographs more reflective of you.

What is included:

  • 5 nights lodging at Moab Valley Inn  (See Lodging notes below)
  • All instruction:  daily presentations, critiques, processing and field sessions
  • One lunch and a catered dinner for all day Needles District field trip
  • A second catered field dinner for a second long afternoon/eve field trip
  • Daily coffee, tea, snacks, water
  • All NPS and BLM fees

What is NOT included:

Airfare, car rentals, computer, software, camera gear and meals are not included, nor are any items of a personal nature. Participants will be required to transport themselves to and from our meeting location in Moab, Utah.

Lodging notes:

We’ve selected Moab Valley Inn as a base for this workshop.

  • You do NOT need to register separately with the Inn. We will take care of your registration and provide you with your room information.
  • We have arranged for a block of rooms so that we can all live under one roof.
  • All of our indoor classes will be held in one of the Inn’s conference rooms.
  • Stores, markets, and restaurants are within walking distance.
  • Gas station is next door.
  • Travel to and from our field sites is very convenient.

We have two lodging options:

  • DOUBLE OCCUPANCY (come with a photo friend, or meet a new one).  We have at least 5 rooms at this price.
  • SINGLE OCCUPANCY.  These rooms are available on a first-come basis for an additional fee of  $250 (for all 5 nights).

How do I know who I'm rooming with?

We will keep a running roster of girls and boys, which will be circulated among participants so you can select each other.

The workshop ends on Friday at 4 pm.  You can hit the road or book one more night in the same room.  Those who stay have the option of having one more (free) fun field session and then a dinner together at Moab Brewery.
