Please read carefully before signing up to this workshop:

This workshop is designed for those seeking to advance their image processing and digital print-making skills. Our goal is to provide you with the tools and skills needed to make the transition from RAW file to a desired visualized outcome, on screen and in print.

The digital darkroom offers a rich set of tools and controls that can be applied toward accomplishing your expressive goals. The tools provided within Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop allow you to craft your image into a creation that is uniquely yours, and that is representative of your own style and sensibilities, making you an active participant in shaping its appearance rather than a mere operator of camera controls or canned visual effects.

The processing section of this workshop covers the workflow developed and used by Guy and Michael for their own work, as well as a variety of basic and advanced techniques aimed at accomplishing precise control over color, tone, contrast and detail.

The printing section of this workshop covers every aspect of producing the best possible prints from your processed files, including color management, sizing and sharpening techniques. We will use files of your choice to practice processing and printing.

This workshop is supported by Moab/Legion Paper. Prints will be produced using Epson UltraChrome printers on a variety of Moab substrates. All attendees will return home with at least one exhibition-ready fine art print!

Due to the classroom-intensive nature of this workshop, Michael & Guy will lead only two field photo shoots, although self-directed shoots in nearby locations may be possible at your discretion before class each day.

You may choose to print images captured during the workshop, although it is recommended that you also bring a couple of your own RAW file that you wish to process and print during the workshop.

Participants should bring a laptop computer loaded with the latest versions of Adobe Lightroom CC and Adobe Photoshop CC. Older versions may not offer some of the tools we use, or may behave differently. Photoshop Elements is NOT an adequate substitute.

We will cover rudimentary RAW conversion techniques using Adobe Lightroom (or the similar controls available in Adobe Camera RAW) and will focus most of our time on learning and practicing Photoshop techniques.

If you do not own an Lightroom or Photoshop, 30-day trial versions can be downloaded from Adobe in advance of the workshop. Please be sure to test that both applications are properly installed before meeting us in Death Valley. Internet access from Stovepipe Wells is slow and unreliable.

Participants will be provided with sample files that can be used to practice the techniques learned, although you may choose to use your own files.

Participants should be comfortable operating their computer (Mac or PC) and performing such functions as opening, saving and copying files; downloading images from memory cards; copying and pasting; dragging and dropping; etc.

Recommended for:

  • Photographers seeking an instruction-based classroom workshop for learning or improving their image processing and printing technique;
  • Photographers who already have basic familiarity with digital image processing.

Not recommended for:

  • Photographers looking for extensive time in the field (if that is of primary interest to you, consider attending one of our Visionary Death Valley workshop instead);
  • Photographers who do not wish to work in Photoshop;
  • Photographers who are not comfortable working with a computer.
